Definition of Headaches

Headache is a pain in the head and not confined to any nerve distribution area. Headache is also known as Cephalalgia or cephalgia. Cephalalgia comes from the Greek "kephale" means "head", and "algos" meaning "sick". Types of headache vary widely. Some of the causes of headaches are benign while others can be a medical emergency. Among the headaches which ranks most is pain.

Headache Classification


Headaches have many causes, and in 2007 the International Headache Society agreed classification system for headache. Because so many people suffer from headaches and find the right cure headaches sometimes difficult, it is hoped that the new classification system will allow health care practitioners can diagnose the specific type of headache and to provide better treatment and effective.

There are three major categories of headaches:


1.  Primary headache.

  • Migraine
  • Tension Headache
  • Cluster headaches
  • Other Primary Headaches
2.  Secondary headaches. 
  • Headache attributed to head and / or neck trauma
  • Headaches associated with cranial and / or cervical vascular disorder
  • Headache attributed to non-vascular intracranial disorder
  • Headaches caused by an object or the effect of a substance
  • Headache due to infection
  • Headache due to the disruption of homeostasis
  • Headache or facial pain associated with disorder skull, neck, eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, teeth, mouth or face or other cranial structures
  • Headache due to interference psychiatric 
3.  Cranial neuralgia, facial pain, and other headaches.
  • The main causes of cranial neuralgia and facial pain
  • Headaches, cranial neuralgia, central or primary facial pain other
